Compare AI models, web-assisted answers and search carefully

AI comparisons must name the system, interface, question and retrieval conditions. A consumer assistant, a provider API, a web-informed answer, an answer produced without enabled web tools, an ordinary search result and a Google AI Overview are different observation conditions. Research can compare their representations when the differences are recorded. A finding from one condition cannot be substituted for evidence from another, even when both carry the same provider name.

Name the surface, not just the brand

Record the provider, model identifier and version where exposed, any routing intermediary, the consumer or API interface, available tools, conversation context and collection date. Language, location, account context or personalization may also matter. State unknown configurations as unknown. A system label such as ‘ChatGPT’ or ‘Gemini’ alone is insufficient for a strict comparison.

Use ‘native’ to identify the actual provider or consumer setting being observed; do not use it as a synonym for ‘no web’. A native interface can enable search. Without-web observations describe the recorded tool configuration and available execution evidence, not verified access to pure training memory.

Organic search results record ranked links. An AI Overview records Google’s named generated answer surface when present. Google documents that AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques and can show different responses or links; see Google’s AI-feature guidance. Neither surface is a captured native ChatGPT answer.

Compare in every relevant direction

A research design can compare identified models under matched conditions, the same system with and without web assistance, different web-informed systems, or compatible observations over time. The contrast must follow the question being investigated. Comparing a short search query with a rich assistant prompt may describe two experiences, but it does not isolate a model effect.

A calibrated model-comparison protocol and search-query observation have different purposes. Matching the exact input controls one dimension; it does not equalize interfaces, retrieval infrastructure, tool choices or hidden versions. Repeated observations can examine stability within the specified design without proving what all consumers usually see.

Illustration, not a result: if a provider is named without web assistance but its website is linked only when search is enabled, the recorded contrast concerns mention and source presentation in those cells. It does not show that search created the organization’s reputation or reveal how the model learned its name.

AAI’s method places surface selection within the research design, so the comparison follows the decision rather than whichever systems are easiest to collect.

Record the differences and the evidence gaps

Preserve the input version, collection method, tool configuration, known model identity, visible references, failures and incomplete captures. Where execution records expose retrieval, retain their relationship to the answer; where they do not, do not infer retrieval from a displayed link alone.

Tool availability and tool use are separate observations. A web tool enabled for a run may not have been invoked. An assistant that provides no visible citations is not thereby proven to have used no external information. These unknowns constrain the comparison and should appear beside the result.

Use the matched population relevant to the claim and disclose exclusions. The comparability reference explains how to preserve this information across periods. New configurations should not retrospectively relabel older observations.

Measurement and uncertainty explains how exclusions and unavailable observations affect the result. The evidence standard keeps an observed divergence separate from a proposed mechanism.

Interpret divergence as a scoped finding

A difference in retained answers may reveal uneven recognition, different recommendation conditions, alternative source environments or contrasting narratives. Check entity identity and role classification before describing the pattern. A real difference can be useful even when its cause is unknown.

Divergence does not establish which system is factually correct, more trustworthy or commercially dominant. Agreement does not establish truth either. Independent business facts and source support are needed to evaluate the descriptions, while a causal account requires a design that can test the proposed factor.

The study-evaluation guide helps assess a claimed comparison. An organizational diagnosis can then ask whether the observed difference matters to the buyer decision, rather than promising that every model will converge on one preferred answer.

The organizational pathway can investigate whether a scoped difference matters to an actual business decision, without promising convergence across systems.

Common questions

Are API responses equivalent to the consumer app?
No. Interfaces, tools and observation conditions can differ. Record those differences rather than assuming equivalence.
Does a Google ranking prove visibility in ChatGPT?
No. Google search position and a ChatGPT answer are separate observations. Each requires its own evidence.

06 Where this leads

A provider name is not a complete observation setting. The Google AI Overviews guide separates generated answers, supporting links and organic results. The Gemini guide distinguishes public-market questions from answers using supplied or connected material. Choose the experience relevant to the decision before comparing its outcomes with another system.
