What a website can contribute to an AI authority diagnosis

Website evidence shows what an organization makes publicly available about its identity, services, locations and claims. Comparing it with external sources and captured AI answers can reveal factual ambiguity, contradiction, missing substantiation or strengths worth preserving. Website access, search eligibility, retrieval, citation and recommendation are separate questions. A website review cannot reveal training inclusion or prove which hidden factor caused an AI answer.

Establish the owned evidence and its limits

Inspect the pages relevant to the buyer question, not just the homepage. Check entity names, organizational relationships, service scope, location, dates and evidence supporting important claims. Distinguish the organization’s assertion from independently verified facts. An owned page can be a useful primary source for what a company offers while remaining an interested account of its quality.

Separate textual clarity from technical availability. A public URL may be blocked, incomplete, stale or inaccessible in the collection environment. Record the page, inspection time and actual content examined. A successful human visit is not proof that every relevant system can retrieve the same content.

Structured data should describe the visible information faithfully. It is not a substitute for a readable explanation or proof of citation. Google states that eligible supporting links in its AI features require indexing and snippet eligibility, while meeting those requirements does not guarantee serving; see Google’s AI-feature documentation.

Compare owned and external accounts

Compare the relevant website passage, permitted business facts, external references and retained answer. Identify which object contains the discrepancy and whether the difference may reflect time, geography or entity scope. A current website statement does not automatically invalidate a historical answer about a previous service.

Illustration, not a client result: the website describes a regional specialist service, while an old directory calls the company a general provider. An answer repeats the broader description. The evidence supports a discrepancy to investigate; it does not prove the directory caused the answer.

Retain agreements and strengths. Accurate, well-supported positioning may warrant protection rather than rewriting. A gap in external corroboration, unclear ownership and an inaccurate service description are different problems and may require different evidence or responsibilities.

The identity reference helps establish whose claim or domain is being compared; source provenance tests the exact supporting passage. For account-based material, social and video evidence adds author and inspection checks.

Interpret found but not cited

A search listing establishes that the page appeared in that search capture. It does not prove the page was retrieved for a particular generated answer. Retrieval, where directly evidenced, is still distinct from citation. Citation is distinct from a recommendation of the organization.

OpenAI documents separate controls for its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and training crawler, GPTBot. That separation helps explain why search access and training permission should not be conflated; it does not establish that a page entered training or will be cited. See OpenAI’s crawler documentation.

If a site is accessible but uncited, examine relevance, claim support, source roles and the actual answer conditions before proposing a remedy. The website citation guide supplies the practical pathway; this reference explains the meaning of the evidence.

Brief a proportionate response

A verified ambiguity can support clarification of a specific fact. A material claim with weak support may need evidence development. A contrast across interfaces may need further observation. An accurate account may need no change. The proposed response should follow the supported gap rather than assuming a site rebuild.

A useful brief identifies the affected claim or concept, evidence, intended reader, proposed content owner, implementation responsibility and remaining uncertainty. If the issue spans claims, source relationships and multiple pages, authority architecture may be a separately scoped design question.

The website and communications use case shows how those findings can become an agency brief. Client teams or appointed agencies implement changes; neither a revision nor an access fix guarantees future AI selection.

The agency pathway explains how a research contribution can support the team implementing the brief while keeping execution and client responsibility with that team.

Common questions

Does adding structured data guarantee a citation?
No. Access, retrieval, citation and recommendation are different questions and need their own evidence.
Should we rewrite the site because one answer is wrong?
No. The diagnosis may support clarification, further investigation, protection of existing strengths or no immediate change.

06 Where this leads

A website finding is ready for a priority discussion when the affected fact, evidence and responsible owner are clear. The prioritization guide helps decide whether the finding calls for protection, clarification, investigation or a test. An accessible page and a supported statement are useful assets; their existence does not settle how future AI answers will use them.
