AI authority research glossary

The glossary gives AI authority research a precise vocabulary for organizations, answer roles, sources, observations and decisions. Each registered concept has one definition owner. General research terms are defined here; institutional, service, policy and decision terms link to their competent pages. These operational meanings make a study easier to read and compare. They do not claim exclusive ownership of common terminology or turn an analytical label into a measured result.

01 Glossary

Organizations and answer roles

Begin with the object being described: an organization, brand, group, location, domain or publisher. Then read the role assigned in the answer. Presence, citation and recommendation can coexist, but each refers to a different relationship. A platform hosting a cited page is not necessarily the source author or the provider recommended.

The definitions below distinguish observable representation, entity recognition, assigned role and question-conditioned market. Their application pages explain how to classify actual wording and source relationships. A concise definition establishes a term’s meaning; it does not replace the evidence needed for a claim about a company.

02 Glossary

Observations and comparisons

A result should identify the question, system, interface, retrieval conditions, time and eligible population. Capture provenance lets the reader trace what was observed. Comparability explains why observations may be read together. A denominator specifies what a rate or share includes, and missingness identifies evidence that cannot be treated as a valid negative.

Use the definition link when a term determines the interpretation. A query universe is a research scope, rather than measured human demand. Source share concerns a declared reference population, rather than economic market share. Those distinctions remain necessary when a result is extracted from the surrounding article.

03 Glossary

Diagnosis and decisions

A hypothesis proposes an explanation to examine. A counter-signal can limit that explanation. Diagnostic significance concerns what a finding helps an organization understand; action materiality concerns whether the evidence and business context justify a response. An important unknown can belong in a diagnosis without becoming an executive action.

Definitions of organizational offers, implementation responsibility, agency reuse, privacy and legal identity remain with their registered owners. The 53-concept index below points to those pages without copying their definitions. Read the decision guides for application and the evidence standard for the support a conclusion requires.

Definitions

Observable AI representation
Observable AI representation is what an identified answer says about an entity under recorded conditions. It describes an output, not the system's private beliefs or the truth of every statement.Narratives and positioning shows how observable wording can support an interpretation while preserving counter-signals and separating it from hidden model mechanisms.
Entity recognition
Entity recognition establishes which organization, brand, group, location or other object an answer refers to. The match uses contextual evidence and declared identity rules; a shared name or domain is not automatic equivalence, and unresolved matches remain uncertain. The identity reference applies recognition rules to namesakes, group relationships and ambiguous wording before appearances are counted.
Assigned role
An assigned role is the function an organization has in an observed answer, such as example, comparison, source, framing reference or recommended provider. The question and qualifying wording remain part of the classification.
Visibility versus authority
Visibility records an entity’s presence within a defined observation scope. Authority, in AAI Kernel’s operational usage, concerns the position and assigned role given to an organization in that context. The distinction is an analytical convention, not a universal business-quality or factual-credibility score.Apply the visibility–authority distinction with the authority reference, which examines position and role without turning visibility into a judgment of business quality.
Question-conditioned market
A question-conditioned market is the set of relevant actors and needs defined by the question being investigated. It should not be treated as a complete census of the commercial market.
Source and citation roles
Source and citation roles distinguish the referenced object, its author or publisher, its host and the organization discussed. A visible citation and a source name in prose are different relationships; neither makes the publisher, platform and subject interchangeable. The source reference uses these roles to distinguish the linked object, publisher, host and provider when evaluating support for a claim.
Intermediary
An intermediary is an actor or source positioned between other participants in an observed context. Its presence does not by itself prove control over a model's answer or the business market.
Narrative framing
Narrative framing is how retained answer wording presents an organization through attributes, comparisons, qualifications and emphasis. The wording is observable; identifying its broader narrative significance is an analytical interpretation that needs context, declared rules and counterexamples.
Website evidence
Website evidence is the observable information an organization makes available on its site, retained with the page and inspection context. It can support checks of identity, services and claims. Accessibility or content availability does not prove training inclusion, answer retrieval or hidden causal influence.Website evidence applies the owned-source distinction by comparing an organization’s account with external references and retained answers.
Model and surface
A model is the identified computational system or version used to generate an output. A surface is the interface and setting in which that output is observed. Provider, model identity, routing, consumer or API interface, retrieval mode and collection conditions are separate dimensions; a shared provider name does not establish equivalence. The surface reference shows which system, interface and retrieval conditions must remain visible when observations are compared.
Longitudinal change
Longitudinal change is a difference across time in a declared set of comparable observations. The comparison retains dates, population and relevant collection conditions. It describes temporal variation without automatically establishing an intervention effect.Comparability and change turns the definition into a reading of matched observations, exclusions and the limits of before-and-after inference.
Observation scope
Observation scope specifies the questions, entities, market, language, geography, system, surface, retrieval conditions and time window covered by a finding.
Native versus web-assisted
Native versus web-assisted distinguishes provider or consumer-interface observations from the separate condition of web assistance. A native interface can use web search. With-web and without-web labels describe recorded retrieval configuration and execution evidence, with unknown use stated explicitly; they do not reveal pure training memory or every hidden information source.
Capture and provenance
A capture is a retained observation identified by its time and collection context. Provenance records its source, acquisition and subsequent transformation or classification. A later export or page inspection is not the original observation time.
Connected evidence base
A connected evidence base preserves traceable relationships between observations, questions, entities, claims and sources. A connection supports inspection; it does not automatically establish causation.
Comparability
Comparability is the justified basis for interpreting observations together for a specified question. It depends on matching relevant dimensions and disclosing differences, exclusions, missingness and eligible denominators. Comparability for one measure does not establish equivalence for every purpose.
Measurement versus interpretation
Measurement records or derives a result from defined evidence and rules. Interpretation explains its possible meaning or significance. An inference extending from evidence and a proposed explanation remain distinguishable from the measured result; neither becomes established merely because the account is plausible.
Traceability
Traceability is the path from a claim to its supporting observation, source or derivation. Evidence access may be restricted, but those limits should be explicit.
Scope boundary
A scope boundary states the conditions under which a claim is supported and what the evidence leaves outside it. Essential limits accompany the finding in a summary, excerpt, table or quotation rather than relying on surrounding paragraphs.
AI citation
An AI citation is a source reference visibly attached to an answer. It identifies a referenced object, not necessarily a recommended organization.
Recommendation
A recommendation is an observed statement presenting an organization or option as suitable for the stated choice. Conditions, criteria and context remain part of the reading.
Denominator
A denominator is the explicitly defined eligible population used to calculate a rate or share. Answers, distinct questions, captures and source occurrences are different possible populations. The denominator and numerator rules must be stated together because different populations answer different questions.
Missing observation
A missing observation is an unavailable or ineligible evidence item. It is distinct from a valid captured answer with no qualifying mention and from a confirmed empty surface. Missing evidence must not silently be counted as nonappearance or zero.
Social and video evidence
Social and video evidence is attributable material from specified platforms, accounts or content objects admitted within known access, coverage and reliability limits. The inspected title, metadata, transcript or recording must be distinguished, and a platform host is not automatically the author or organization represented. The social and video reference explains how authorship and the content actually inspected constrain the use of these observations.
Source environment
The source environment is the observable set of publishers, institutions, intermediaries, platforms, owned pages and other references relevant to a defined investigation. It describes the admitted source scope, not every information source or influence inside a model.
Competitor context
Competitor context identifies the eligible alternatives and their roles for the selected buyer questions. It is not a complete commercial-market census.
Diagnostic significance
Diagnostic significance is a finding’s supported importance for understanding an organization or market. It is distinct from statistical significance and from justification for an action. A meaningful strength, discrepancy or unknown may belong in a diagnosis without becoming an implementation directive.
Action materiality
Action materiality is the evidential and business justification for promoting a finding into a proposed response. Relevant considerations include decision significance, controllability, uncertainty and alternatives. Diagnostic importance alone does not establish that action is warranted.
Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a proposed explanation or relationship to examine against evidence. Its assumptions and potentially contrary observations should be identifiable. Plausibility, model self-report or repetition does not make a hypothesis an established result.
Counter-signal
A counter-signal is relevant evidence that qualifies, contradicts or limits an interpretation. It should inform the conclusion rather than be excluded for convenience.
Query universe
A query universe is a governed set of research questions defining an observation scope. Its selection and versions condition the findings. Repeated research queries do not measure human search demand, and a public scope description does not release proprietary prompts.
Structured data
Structured data is a machine-readable description of page information consistent with the visible content. It supports a declared representation of that information; it does not establish that a system indexed, retrieved, cited or recommended the page or organization.
AI Overview
An AI Overview is Google’s named generated-answer surface when it is observed in a search capture. Its presence, text and source links are distinct from ordinary organic results, AI Mode and native assistant observations; an unavailable capture is not a confirmed absence.
Source share
Source share is a specified proportion of references within an explicit eligible source population and observation period. The unit, normalization and deduplication rules must be declared. Source share is not economic market share, human demand or a measure of hidden influence.

Terms defined on their own pages

  • AI Authority Intelligence is defined with AAI Kernel’s institutional specialization, so the field label is read in the context of the company that uses it.
  • Organization diagnosis belongs with the organizational research pathway, which explains the evidence and decision it connects.
  • Prioritized authority roadmap is defined with the organizational output, where priorities remain bounded by evidence and the client’s question.
  • Implementation responsibility identifies who carries out the response after research, keeping delivery roles separate from diagnosis.
  • Agency collaboration is defined in the agency relationship, where the research contribution and the agency’s client role are agreed.
  • Agency reuse rights belongs with the agency engagement because presentation, branding and redistribution require specific agreement.
  • Editorial research commission distinguishes new research for a publisher from permission to reuse an existing publication.
  • Research attribution identifies the actual research and publishing contributions without implying a broader endorsement.

  • Enquiry intake belongs on Contact, where the information needed for an initial assessment is explained.
  • Personal-information processing belongs in the Privacy notice, which addresses the website’s handling of personal information.
  • Website reuse is defined in the website terms; permission to inspect a page does not settle every right to use its contents.
  • Research/data access identifies permission for a specified object and purpose, rather than an unrestricted data service.
  • Research commission formats is defined alongside the forms of work, which are shaped around a question rather than fixed packages.
  • Authority architecture belongs in the design decision guide, where its scope is distinguished from both diagnosis and implementation.
  • Original research publication is defined by the evidence, permissions and review requirements an actual publication must meet.

Common questions

Is a citation a recommendation?
No. A citation references a source; a recommendation presents an option as suitable for the stated choice. Each requires its own reading.
Does authority mean a universal score?
No. AAI uses authority to examine an organization's assigned role and position in a defined answer context.

07 Where this leads

A definition fixes the meaning of a term; reading an answer still requires context. Presence, citation and recommendation shows how different roles can coexist in one answer. Measurement and uncertainty explains how those classifications, eligible populations and missing observations shape the result a reader can reasonably use.
