Scope a confidential research question

A confidential investigation can begin with a non-sensitive account of what the organization needs to decide. Detailed evidence, access and handling should be agreed before restricted information is shared.

01 Use cases

Start with the decision

In the illustrative confidential research commission: a leadership team considering a rebrand wants to investigate current AI positioning before announcing its plans. The initial question can describe a sector, market and uncertainty without revealing the proposed name or internal strategy. The purpose is to establish which evidence and private inputs are needed for a useful decision.

This is an illustrative private-research pattern. A team might need to understand positioning, competitor context, source dependence or an emerging representation concern. State the type of question and intended use without including confidential strategy in the initial enquiry.

A useful scope identifies what evidence could change the decision and what is already known.

02 Use cases

Assess feasibility and permissions

In the illustrative confidential research commission, separate public observations from restricted business facts. A private plan may help evaluate strategic fit, but putting it into an assistant's context would test a different situation from ordinary public discovery. Agree whether such a test is needed and permitted. Confidential material should not enter a public-market observation silently or become a public source citation by default.

Identify who owns the material, who may use it, which recipients need access and what restrictions apply. Assess whether the relevant observations exist and can answer the question.

Confidentiality does not make an otherwise unsupported conclusion valid. Unknowns, missing coverage and method limits remain part of the output.

Confidential scope preparation; actual handling terms are agreed for the engagement.

The access guidance provides the questions about recipients, uses and disclosure that must be settled before restricted evidence enters the investigation.

03 Use cases

Agree the private output

In the illustrative confidential research commission, AAI Kernel can scope identity, competitor, narrative or source questions around permitted evidence and intended recipients. The output should identify what is established, what is proposed and what remains unknown. A relevant website or external reference can be investigated without disclosing a private strategy; sensitive inputs need agreed handling before transfer. Confidentiality terms and delivery formats belong to the specific engagement.

Define the findings, explanations, open questions and bounded directions the team needs. Agree access, reuse, retention and delivery terms for the specific engagement.

Do not assume that every underlying source can be redistributed or that all formats are included. The useful deliverable depends on the evidence and rights available.

Agree what each recipient actually needs to inspect. Leadership may need the decision and its basis; the appointed agency may need permitted excerpts for a specific brief; a research reviewer may need deeper evidence access. Define those needs before choosing a delivery format. Access to a private output does not automatically confer rights to redistribute third-party material, upload it into another tool or publish it under the client's brand. Any restricted transfer should follow the handling arrangement agreed for that engagement.

The evidence standard applies inside a private report too: confidentiality changes who can inspect the evidence, not what supports the conclusion.

04 Use cases

Keep publication separate

In the illustrative confidential research commission, leadership decides how the findings affect the private plan, and its authorized team or agency implements any response. Keep strengths and possible corrections distinct from speculative positioning ideas. Any later publication, client attribution or reuse needs separate agreement. Begin through Contact with a non-sensitive decision description and the type of confidentiality discussion required.

Private findings do not become public research or an Observatory reading by default. Any later disclosure needs separate permission and editorial acceptance.

Begin with the existing enquiry question: what do you need to understand or decide? We can discuss an appropriate scope before sensitive material is exchanged.

A private engagement can preserve a useful distinction between a factual correction and a strategic idea. Verified company identity or service information may be suitable for an approved public update, while a planned repositioning remains restricted. The client decides which materials can move into implementation and which must stay within the research review. Revisit permissions if recipients or intended use change, and retain the evidence limits even when circulation is narrow.

Use the commissioning guide to connect the private decision to an agreed scope and handoff while keeping later publication a separate permission.

The organizational pathway serves a private business decision; the media pathway frames a new investigation intended for publication. Moving between those uses requires a separate discussion of evidence and permission.

Common questions

Can we discuss an embargoed or sensitive project?
Yes. Begin with a non-sensitive description, then agree confidentiality and handling before sharing restricted material.
Will private findings appear in public research?
Not by default. Public use requires separate permissions and editorial acceptance.
06 Use cases

Discuss a confidential research question

Begin with a non-sensitive description of the decision and intended recipients. We can discuss scope and appropriate handling before restricted material is shared.

07 Where this leads

The starting point is a non-sensitive account of the decision through Contact. State that handling needs discussion before restricted material is transferred. The Privacy notice describes information supplied through the website; it does not replace the access, retention and disclosure terms to be agreed for the research itself.
