Read the sources behind an AI answer
A useful AI source map identifies the exact reference, its author or publisher, its host and the claim it can support. Research can reveal repeated publishers, concentrated evidence, conflicting accounts or an organization described through intermediaries. A visible citation alone does not establish factual correctness, recommendation or causal influence. Assess the source passage and its context before interpreting the reference’s significance.
Follow the citation to the relevant passage
Retain the answer, visible citation relationship, exact URL and capture date. Distinguish a source named in prose from a link attached to the answer and from a related-content suggestion. Where possible, preserve a permitted record of the cited passage; a page inspected later may differ from the page available when the answer was produced.
Check the cited object rather than assuming its homepage or domain contains the relevant evidence. Redirects, revised pages, inaccessible documents and removed content should remain visible limitations. If the original passage cannot be recovered, state that support at the observation date could not be verified.
Source support is claim-specific. A page may establish that a service exists while failing to substantiate a statement about its quality or suitability. The citation reference distinguishes that evidential relationship from the role assigned to an organization.
Classify the source environment
Separate an owned website, independent publisher, institution, directory, marketplace, review page and social or video host. Identify the responsible author or account where relevant. A hosting platform can distribute a source without authoring it, and the organization discussed need not own either the source or the domain.
Illustration, not a finding: a news article on a video platform reviews Provider A. The platform is the host, the newsroom is the publisher, the video is the source object and Provider A is the subject. Counting that reference as a recommendation of the platform or a citation of A’s company website would merge different roles.
Choose the aggregation unit explicitly: exact URL, domain, publisher or reconciled entity. The source-share definition requires an eligible source population and period. A domain count is not economic market share, and several copies of one story do not necessarily constitute independent corroboration.
The social and video reference extends attribution checks to accounts, hosts and inspected media. Narratives and positioning then examines the account those sources give of the organization.
Check support, currency and independence
Ask whether the source addresses the right entity, time, place and claim. Examine the qualifying language and whether the answer omitted a material condition. Check the origin of the evidence: an apparently independent article may repeat a company release or another publication without new verification.
An owned page may be the most appropriate source for a current service or location. An external page may offer independent assessment, but independence alone does not make its content accurate or current. Treat source roles as evidence questions rather than an automatic ranking of credibility.
A missing visible source does not prove a claim false. A source declared influential by the model is a self-report, not demonstrated influence. Visible references, declared reasons, behavioral associations and controlled causal evidence require separate labels under the evidence standard.
Turn source gaps into research questions
A concentrated set of references can reveal that a sampled answer environment is described through a narrow group of publishers. It may suggest exposure to outdated or repeated accounts. The conclusion remains bounded by source capture, identity and aggregation rules; concentration does not prove algorithmic dependence or a publisher’s control of the market.
Contradictory source descriptions can motivate a factual investigation. Weak support can motivate evidence development. A reliable source already explaining the organization accurately may be worth protecting. None of these observations automatically justifies buying mentions, changing every page or treating citation volume as the goal.
The website evidence reference compares owned and external accounts. The editorial investigation use case shows how a source question can become an independently checkable research brief.
The priority guide tests whether a supported source gap warrants action; the website and communications brief shows how an agreed response reaches the responsible team.
Common questions
- Which sources influence how AI describes our company?
- A source map can identify visible references and assess their support. It cannot reveal every influence on the model or prove hidden causal weights.
- Does a source’s appearance prove it caused the answer?
- No. Appearance establishes an observed reference, not that the source caused the answer. A causal account requires additional evidence.
06 Where this leads
Source mapping identifies the objects behind the links; their counts still need a defined population. Measurement and uncertainty explains that boundary. If the practical concern is an owned page that could substantiate the answer, the website citation guide separates access, relevance and claim support before proposing a content response.
